Subject: Program Priority Levels
Hi Tom,

I wanted to get your opinion on program priority levels with regard to Windows 10 CPU function.

There have been cases where some of my machines randomly lose their connection to KFlop and the most common reason seems to be when another application pops open an alert window (such as updates available).

I learned that when a program is open that you go into Task Manager and bump up the priority for any running application. Do you think it's possible to write a program which would execute when KMotion starts which could bump it's priority up to the top level? Does this approach make sense to you?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
David.

Hi David,

Sorry to hear that.  I'm not aware of anyone else reporting this issue.

Alert windows obviously shouldn't cause a USB disconnect.  Do you really get a disconnect message or something else like buffer underflow?  Does it happen while running a Job or when idle?

I wouldn't expect Priorities to help.  #1 running slow shouldn't cause a USB disconnect.  #2 Setting an Application to a higher priority wouldn't help if something at a low level like USB Driver is being blocked.  But Windows and Priorities are very complex.  Did you try manually changing the Priorities?  Did it help?

I wonder if the update is installing new drivers or something?  You might note what exactly the update notification is?

Regards

TK

Hi Tom,

I don't have a screenshot of the error, but I believe it is a KMotionCNC cannot connect type of error. It will often happen part way through executing a gcode program. I used to get a similar error (perhaps the same one) before I started installing good, dedicated 5VDC power supplies for the KFlop/SnapAmp boards. The message appears but when you look at the screen it shows connection to the boards in the header of the windows, so I guess it was a short interruption.

I haven't tried adjusting the priorities, as I wanted to bounce the idea off of you first. I trust you have a much clearer knowledge of this than I will ever have.

One occurrence was yesterday and when I looked at the screen, there was a notification that Dell had update it wanted to install. I installed the update, re-initialized and away we went. Not sure that was the cause, but I got thinking that I had seen a similar notification a few weeks back during a similar disconnect.

Best regards,
David.
